Department Information

Since its establishment in 1941, the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art (EMA) at Indiana University (IU) has grown from a small university teaching collection into one of the foremost university art museums in the country. A preeminent teaching museum, its internationally acclaimed collection includes more than 47,000 objects representing nearly every art-producing culture throughout history. Collection areas include African art, ancient art, Asian art, global contemporary art, European and American Art, Indigenous art, Oceanic art, and prints, drawings, and photography.

Job Summary

The Eskenazi Museum of Art seeks IU students as part-time staff to lead interactive tours of the museum.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Leads K-12 and some public tours. This includes asking open-ended questions (as discussion prompts), facilitating in-gallery activities (e.g., using storytelling prompts, sketching prompts, etc.), and sharing relevant information (e.g., historical or cultural facts) for groups of visitors regarding artwork, exhibitions, and the museum building.
  • Reports any observations, concerns, or incidents to supervisory or security staff that may require action and attention.
  • Knows all safety procedures to be responsible for large groups of people (e.g., knowledge of fire exits, elevators, and restroom facilities).

  • Ability to use a computer or electronic device to access learning content and tour scheduling online.
  • Ability to greet museum visitors and lead in gallery experiences using knowledge and interpretive techniques learned through training.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the person to monitor experiences and respond quickly to the needs of guests and security. This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment to access learning content and tour scheduling online (e.g., Canvas, SignUpGenius).

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations while leading guests through the museum and talking with guests about artwork.

The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.

Additional Information

During their first semester, Student Guides will complete an introductory training course. The purpose of this training is to familiarize guides with the EMA's collection, general museum policies, and educational practices. Training includes learning discussion questions and approaches for talking about art and practicing those techniques, learning information about artworks on view, learning tours for school groups, as well as observing in-gallery experiences. Trainees occasionally lead in-gallery experiences or portions of tours as they develop their knowledge and skill set.

All Student Guides (new or otherwise) must attend monthly training sessions during the academic semesters, and complete self-guided tasks. This will include learning information about artworks, preparing for tours, and writing personal reflections.

Advertised Salary

$15.00 per hour

Work Hours

Student Guides must be available for training and tours.

After completing a paid training period, Student Guides can expect to work 8 hours a month.

The work schedule varies, based on tours.

Flexible work schedule; occasionally working weekends is required.

Per IU policy, this position is capped at 29 hours per week.
